Technical presentation Wednesday 20th July 2011
on Advanced Numerical Techniques for EMC-related Bioelectromagnetic and Medical Applications
Presenter:      Prof. Mauro Feliziani
University of L’Aquila  Department of Electrical and Information Engineering
Summary: The aim of the speech was to present advanced  numerical models and methods for bioelectromagnetic applications and medical devices. This is obviously done not from a medical or biological point of view but from an engineering point of view, mainly focusing on the fundamental importance of the recent numerical methods developed for dosimetry and medical applications. Nowadays, numerical modeling is become an indispensable tool posing the basis of our knowledge on how electromagnetic fields (EMFs) interact with the human body.

This knowledge not only underlies the recommendations of professional bodies and government agencies given to prevent any related health hazard, but also provides insight into how these EMFs can be used for the benefit of patients in developing medical diagnostic and therapeutic techniques.
The topics of the talk were: Human body modeling including their physical properties. The conventional voxel-based models and the CAD models coming from segmentation procedures on MRI or CT image scans will be presented.Electromagnetic (EM) and thermal modeling and simulation. The recent advancements in bioelectromagnetic equation solution by numerical techniques (FDTD, FEM, FD2TD,…) werepresented. A variegate list of EM sources (far-field and near-field, narrow band and ultrawide band) were considered. The thermal model  included thermoregulation and vascularization effects.
Applications. Numerical dosimetry of EMF sources. Communication performances of Body area network (BAN) and  Radio frequency Identification (RFID) systems. Hyperthermia. Wireless Power Transfer in Implanted Medical Devices.

Biography of Mauro Feliziani

Mauro Feliziani (M’91–SM’00) received his degree in electrical engineering from the University of Rome La Sapienza, Rome, Italy, in 1983. From 1987 to 1994 he was with the University of Rome “La Sapienza” as Researcher (1987-90), Assistant Professor (1990-92) and Associate Professor (1992-94). In 1994 he joined  the University of L’Aquila, Italy, as Full Professor of Electrical Engineering.

He is the author or coauthor of more than 100 papers published in the fields of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and in electromagnetic field numerical computation. His current research interests include bioelectromagnetics, RFID, ultra-wideband, wireless communications, power line communication, leaky line antennas, and microelectromechanical systems/film bulk acoustic resonators. Prof. Feliziani was the recipient of the Best Paper Award of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INDUSTRY APPLICATIONS in 1995, the Electrostatics Process Committee and the EMC Europe Symposium, in 2000. He was also co-author of the Best Student Paper at the IEEE International Symposium on EMC, Honolulu, USA, 2007, and of the Second Best Student Paper at the BEMS Annual Meeting, Cancun, Mexico, 2006.

From 1995 to 2000, he was an Associate Editor of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY. In March 2003, he was the Guest Editor of a special issue of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON MAGNETICS. In 2008, he was the Guest Editor of a Special Section of COMPEL. In 1994 he was co-founder of EMC Europe Symposium. He was the General Chairman of the EMC Europe Symposium, Sorrento, Italy, in 2002, and of the EMC Europe Workshop, Rome, in 2005. From 1995 to 2000 he was the Secretariat of the International Steering Committee of the EMC Europe Symposium. He is the Technical Program Chair of the next EMC Europe 2012 Symposium, Rome, Italy, Sept. 17-21, 2012.

He has been the Program Committee Member, Editorial Board Member, Tutorial Session Organizer, Invited Speaker, and the Session Chairman of several international conferences.

This presentation was a joint activity of the EMC Society of Australia and the IEEE EMC Society, Victoria, Australia Chapter
